Frequently asked questions
What is a music split sheet?
A music split sheet is a legally binding agreement between songwriters, producers, and other collaborators that documents each party's ownership percentage of a song. It covers both the composition (publishing splits) and the master recording (master splits).
How does the process work?
Fill out the form on our site with your song title, artist name, split percentages, and party details. Pay $3 (or $5 for the LOD bundle) via Shopify checkout. Your custom PDF downloads immediately after payment — no account required.
Do I need a split sheet for every song?
Yes — any song with more than one contributor should have a split sheet. Without one, ownership disputes can arise when a song is synced, streamed, or sampled. Each split sheet is custom-generated for your specific song and parties.
What’s the difference between publishing splits and master recording splits?
Publishing splits cover the composition — the melody and lyrics — and determine how songwriting royalties are divided. Master recording splits cover the actual recorded version and determine how master royalties are divided among producers, artists, and labels.
Is this a legal document?
Yes. A signed split sheet is a binding agreement between all parties. It documents the agreed ownership percentages for both the composition and the master recording. We recommend all parties retain a signed copy.
What format do I receive?
You receive a custom PDF with your song details and splits pre-filled. It can be signed digitally using Adobe Acrobat, DocuSign, or any PDF signing tool, or printed and signed by hand.
What is a Letter of Direction (LOD)?
A Letter of Direction tells SoundExchange (or another neighboring rights society) how to split and direct digital performance royalties. If you have a producer, featured artist, or label who needs royalties routed separately, the LOD is required.
Does this work outside the United States?
Yes. The PRO fields support international societies including PRS (UK), SOCAN (Canada), APRA AMCOS (Australia/New Zealand), ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and others.
